Types of Sleep Apnea and Treatment Options

There are two types of sleep apnea. Central Sleep Apnea (CSA) is a neurological condition where the brain temporarily fails to signal your involuntary muscles to breathe. CSA is usually treated with medications and the use of a CPAP machine.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is when the muscles in the back of the throat relax and sag into the airway, creating an obstruction. OSA can be treated with a CPAP machine. However, many patients have found superior relief with devices custom designed by our dentist. Oral appliances maintain the proper position of the jaw bone, tongue, and throat muscles, so they do not collapse during slumber and interfere with breathing.

Symptoms and Health Risks of Sleep Apnea

Many people cannot remember the interruptions they experienced while asleep, but they may have some tell-tale signs of sleep apnea. If your family members notice loud snoring or gasping while you sleep or you wake-up with a headache or dry mouth, you could have sleep apnea. Fatigue, irritability, and difficulty focusing are also signs that may be attributed to this condition.

Sleep apnea is known to contribute to many serious health conditions, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, depression, and obesity. When deprived of the deep sleep that rejuvenates and repairs the body, your health is placed in serious jeopardy.

Dr. Privatsky can walk you through the process of finding solutions to your poor sleeping patterns. He also designs therapeutic devices that comfortably treat your sleep apnea so that you can rest peacefully.
